Used as a plasticizer for cellulose acetate, a mosquito repellent and a solvent for polyvinyl fluoride coatings. Dimethyl phthalate is an intermediate of the rodenticides diratide, chrysone, and chlormatrione, and it is also an important solvent. It can be used as a plasticizer in the production of cellulose esters, polyvinyl acetate, resins, and coumarin; it can also be used as a waterproofing agent; it can also be used for flotation of polymetallic ores.
