Berberine, also known as berberine, is the main active ingredient extracted from the rhizome of Rhizoma Coptidis, a plant of the genus Ranunculaceae. It mostly exists in the form of quaternary ammonium salts in nature. Berberine hydrochloride has various pharmacological effects such as antimicrobial, antiarrhythmic, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, sedative and hypnotic.
